(Commonly abbreviated P-E index;
also called precipitation– evaporation index) For a given location, a measure of the long-range effectiveness of precipitation in promoting plant growth: that is, it is equal to 10 times the sum of the monthly precipitation–evaporation ratios (monthly precipitation amounts divided by monthly evaporation amounts).
