buoyancy length scale[edit | edit source]

A measure of the suppression of vertical turbulent motions by statically stable air.

Defined as:
ams2001glos-Be27
where σw is the standard deviation of vertical velocity, and N is the Brunt–Väisälä frequency. It is a useful length scale for the stable boundary layer.


  1. That property of an object that enables it to float on the surface of a liquid, or ascend through and remain freely suspended in a compressible fluid such as the atmosphere.
