detection

  1. The identification, at a stated level of probability, of the presence of a signal or phenomenon with certain characteristics.

Less formally, a signal may be said to be detectable if it is observable under ordinary circumstances.

  2. In radio, radar, and lidar, the conversion of a radio frequency or light signal to an IF signal, or an IF signal to a video signal, accomplished in a detector or mixer.
