faculae

Irregular patches of bright material present in the solar photosphere forming a veined network in the vicinity of sunspots.

These regions are a few hundred degrees Kelvin hotter than their surroundings. They have low contrast on the solar disk and are best observed near the solar limb. These features relate directly to plage or brightenings in the overlying chromosphere.
