flood proofing

Methods for reducing flood damage in flood-prone areas, particularly in the flood plain.

Flood proofing involves techniques such as raising the foundations of new structures above a designated flood elevation, or, for existing buildings, altering exterior walls, windows, and entrances to reduce the frequency of damage to the building.
