wave vector

The vector k in the solution of a wave equation expressed as the product of a time- varying function and A exp(ik · x), where x is the position vector and A is constant in space and time.

The wave vector may, in general, be complex, and its real and imaginary parts need not be parallel, in which instance the wave is inhomogeneous.
