vog

Vog, short for volcanic smog, is the haze formed by gas and fine particle emissions from volcanoes. Since volcanic aerosols—including sulfuric acid/sulfates formed by atmospheric oxidation of volcanically emitted gaseous sulfur dioxide—are hygroscopic, they take up water and form haze, especially in humid environments. Such haze is widespread downwind of the active Kilauea volcano in Hawaii and is known locally as vog.
