runway temperature[edit | edit source]

The temperature of the air just above the runway at an airport (usually at about 4 ft but ideally at engine and/or wing height), used in the determination of density altitude.

Therefore, runway temperature observations are made and reported at airports when critical values of density altitude prevail.


  1. A measure (or condition) of height, especially of great height, as a mountain top or aircraft flight level.
