weather observation

In general, an evaluation of one or more meteorological elements that describe the state of the atmosphere either at the earth's surface or aloft.

Surface weather observations and upper-air observations are the major categories, with a number of subtypes, but separate from these are such categories as radar meteorological observations, sferics, and solar-radiation observations.
