payload

  1. In referring to vehicles for scientific research and/or observation, the dimensions (often only the weight) of the scientific equipment carried by a rocket, aircraft, ship, etc.

    This usually includes sensors, data storage and telemeter gear, and instrument power supply, and sometimes includes special auxiliary equipment and recovery gear.

  2. The environmental sensors and instruments carried on an aircraft, rocket, or satellite.
