loop antenna[edit | edit source]
An antenna consisting of a conducting coil of any convenient cross section, generally circular, that emits and receives radio energy.
The principal lobe of the radiation pattern is wide and is in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the loop. Its primary application in radio meteorology is to the detection of such low frequency radio waves as are employed in sferics and in certain radio direction-finding equipment.
