auroral zone

An approximately circular region around the two geomagnetic poles within which there is a maximum of auroral activity.

It lies about ten to fifteen degrees of geomagnetic latitudes from the geomagnetic poles. The auroral zone broadens and extends equatorward during intense auroral displays.
