Cyclone collector

From Glossary of Meteorology

cyclone collector[edit | edit source]

Instrument used to remove large particles (diameter greater than 3 μm) from ambient air.

The conical geometry of the collector subjects the air to rotation, and the centrifugal force leads to deposition of the particles. The particles can be sampled from the walls of the device for analysis, or simply removed physically from the airflow.
