K index (space weather)

K index (space weather)[edit | edit source]

A space weather–related term for the 3-hourly quasi-logarithmic local index of geomagnetic activity relative to an assumed quiet-day curve for the recording magnetometer site. The range is from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extremely disturbed). This index measures the deviation of the most disturbed geomagnetic component. The individual K indices are combined to make the planetary K, or Kp index.
