Map projection

From Glossary of Meteorology

map projection

Any systematic arrangement of meridians and parallels portraying the curved surface of a sphere or spheroid upon a plane.

The methods for generating the projection are often classified as geometric or analytic. Geometric projections can be classified according to the type of surface on which the projection is assumed to be developed, such as planes, cylinders or cones. Analytical projections are developed by mathematical computation.
