Meteorological equator

meteorological equator

  1. The parallel of latitude of 5°N; so named because this is the annual mean latitude of the equatorial trough.

  2. (Also called equatorial trough.) The axis of the barotropic current that characterizes the low troposphere in equatorial regions.

    This axis is marked by the presence of a convergence line (the intertropical convergence zone).


  3. See heat equator, hyetal equator, thermal equator.
