motorboating

(Obsolete.) The sound heard through the monitoring speaker of an audio-modulated radiosonde when the audio signal became so low in frequency that it resembled the sound of a motorboat.

It corresponded to unmeasurable low humidities. Modern sondes do not have such stringent limitations or produce such a signal.
