Natural remanent magnetization

natural remanent magnetization

(Abbreviated NRM.) The permanent magnetism of a rock.

A rock may also have other types of magnetism, such as induced magnetism that may change when the rock is moved to another location in the geomagnetic field. The NRM does not change with another location but is "frozen" into the rock.
