Radar cross section

From Glossary of Meteorology

radar cross section

For a scattering object or target at a certain range, the cross-sectional area of an isotropic scatterer at the same range that would return the same power to a radar as the actual target.

The radar cross section σ may be defined by
ams2001glos-Re1
where Si is the power density incident on the target at range r and Sr is the backscattered power density at the receiving antenna.
See radar equation;
compare backscattering cross section.
