Sound channel

From Glossary of Meteorology

sound channel

The depth range within the ocean where the speed of sound in seawater takes on a local minimum value.

Sound waves generated within this sound channel or waveguide will, through continual refraction in the vertical due to temperature effects above and pressure effects below, remain within it. These sounds can propagate large horizontal distances within this waveguide with relatively little loss in amplitude.
