Spindown time

spindown time

The length of time required for friction to reduce the relative vorticity of a column of fluid to 1/e = 37.8% of its initial value.

This timescale is used to characterize the importance of friction and presumes an exponential decay of relative vorticity as would occur for linear friction processes.
