Variational objective analysis

variational objective analysis[edit | edit source]

An objective analysis technique used to create an estimate of the atmospheric state that maximizes (or minimizes) a mathematical measure of desirable (or undesirable) characteristics.

The analysis characteristics usually include measures of the fit to data, background field, and dynamical constraints.


  1. In synoptic meteorology, a detailed study of the state of the atmosphere based on observations, usually including a separation of the entity into its component patterns and involving the drawing of families of isopleths for various elements.
